THE THINGS WE DID NEXT – MAY 2021

THE THINGS WE DID NEXT – MAY 2021

Social impact producer and local artist Alex Kelly together with collaborator, artist and curator David Pledger present their speculative futures practice, The Things We Did Next (TTWDNext), including an artist talk, an exhibition of design works, ‘The Things We Made Next’, and a guided listening of their current work in progress, ‘The Planting’, a sound feature.
A multi-platform exploration of futures to come in the era of climates changed and changing, TTWDNext transports collaborators, participants + audiences to 2029 when significant impacts on planetary health are a daily reality, alongside powerful upheavals of our cultural, political and energy systems.

To date TTWDNext has presented differing but interconnecting projects at BLEED festival with Arts House, at Melbourne Design Week and Raft Artspace Alice Springs. This event is the culmination of a residency with the Phee Broadway Theatre At Home Program.

More detail:
‘The Planting’
The Planting is a speculative audio work exploring the development and early years of the largest nation-building project in ‘Australian’ history. A continent-wide project of care and repair, The National Planting Project (NPP) – known colloquially and affectionately as The Planting, is transforming the way people relate to Country and each other.
Directed by Alex Kelly with Writer David Pledger, Sound Design by Lawrence Harvey & Produced by Sophia Marinos.

‘The Things We Made Next’
In 2020, 250 future-building participants came together with 40 artists, thinkers, provocateurs and cultural operators for Assembly for the Future to envision, describe and explore the year 2029. Those gathered entered one of three parallel futures and generated the stories of the watershed moments that led to more than 50 Dispatches from the Future.
The Things We Made Next is five commissioned works from established and emerging designers; each responding to one of these multi-artform Dispatches. The collection connects the social and the political and simultaneously questions conventional modes of practice, whilst embedding designers in collective visions from the future.
Designers for the Future; Alison Page, Damien Wright, Ella Cutler, Su san Cohn, Tessa Zettel Produced by Sophia Marinos and curated by Elliat Rich, David Pledger & Alex Kelly
