RELOCOMOTION – MECHANICS LANE PASTE-UP – 1 August – 25 October
Elissa Sadgrove’s paste-up in Mechanics Lane is from her ‘Relocomotion’ series. It is an expression of one’s (and others) unsettling time of relocating.
Elissa uses the metaphor of car dashboard graphics to build a surreal experience of searching for one’s new home in the middle of the night.
It gives a sense of driving around for hours to find the ‘right’ place, children asleep in the back of the car, feeling like one is in a spaceship. A sense of returning at night to one’s old home, a long way away.
Elissa’s work has been created using a cryptic collage of symbols, printed on different sized poster papers and installed using poster glue. Vinyl letter graphics have been used for the text component.
Drawing on her interest in graphic design, Elissa creates works of whimsical and idiosyncratic symbols. These symbols are analytical and playful responses to her current situations. With autobiographical themes and sleek commercial appearance, her symbols revel in the styles, colours and functions of commercial and information graphics.
