As You Like It – 18, 19, 20, 25-27 May & 1-3 June
The Castlemaine Theatre Company is excited to be taking on one of the Bard’s works for the very first time.
As You Like It is one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies. Director Rob Jorritsma (The Peach Season for the CTC, 2015) is an expert in Shakespeare, having worked for many years creating plays with young people at Castlemaine Steiner School.
Central to the play is the love story between Rosalind and Orlando who fall in love at first sight, but things are not easy. The backdrop for their journey is drawn by two feuding brothers. The friendly Duke Senior has been banished and usurped by his younger brother Duke Frederick and takes refuge in the Forest of Arden, a lovely place of transformation – a tree-change indeed.
Forced by circumstances, Rosalind and her cousin Celia, leave the court and go in search of Duke Senior with Rosalind dressed as a boy and Celia as a country girl. Much calamity ensues, with the comedy dealing in love, mistaken identities and (sort of) happy endings. Unlike so many of Shakespeare’s works, everyone ends up married, rather than dead. Which is good.
A contemporary setting with merry music throughout – don’t miss the fun.
Performances 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 May; 1, 2 and 3 June.
